Central Otago wine company Domaine Thomson takes top honours at Southern Architecture Awards.
Boutique Central Otago winery, Domaine Thomson Wines, has taken out top honours at this year’s Southern Architecture Awards, sharing the Commercial Architecture Win with Camp Glenorchy Eco Retreat and The Precinct Wanaka. The Local Architecture Awards honour the best new architecture in each of the NZIA's eight regional branches.
The award recognises the challenges faced by architects Rowe Baetens Architecture Ltd and Noel Lane Architects, to deliver a seamless, luxury wine tasting facility that retains its sense of place amongst the unique Central Otago landscape and provides welcoming spaces for the winery’s history and narrative to shine.
The judging panel was composed of senior members of the architecture community and guest judges from outside the industry, to give unique insight and perspective from all points of view.
Speaking of the Domaine Thomson cellar door, judges said that the “construction and aesthetics of a traditional steel shed has resulted in this fresh and delightful design interpretation.” And continued to say, “The clarity of this design expresses the vineyard’s commitment to a single grape variety, and proudly announces its presence amid the atmosphere and dramatic landscape of Central Otago.”
The personal touch of the owners, PM and David Hall-Jones was recognised, with the landscaping, interior design and fit out drawing further praise. “By showcasing our direct history with Otago’s Chief Surveyor 1854-1868, John Turnbull Thomson, our commitment to organics and biodynamics” David said “and then adding in our vineyards and wines from Burgundy, we are delighted with the harmonious flow for each unique story within these buildings. We are so enjoying sharing our wines with locals and visitors alike”.
The Cellar Door is located within the 14ha vineyard at 46 Clark Road, 12kms north of Cromwell.
It is open daily 11am to 5pm.
