Throughout 2026, local secondary students have swapped some of their classroom time for boots, tools and a real construction environment, working alongside Breen tutors and experienced local trade professionals to help build a complete transportable home.

Not a model. Not a shed. Not something that gets pulled apart when the learning is finished. A real home.

Along the way, the students have developed practical construction skills, but TradeBase has always been about more than learning how to build. It’s about turning up. Working safely. Asking questions. Solving problems. Working alongside other people. Taking pride in getting something right. And discovering that you’re capable of more than you might have thought.

There is an important distinction at the heart of TradeBase. The students may be in a learning environment, but the standard of the build has always been Breen’s. Students were introduced to the same expectations around workmanship, health and safety, attention to detail and doing the job properly that we expect across any Breen site. Because we reckon if you want young people to understand what good looks like, you need to let them experience it.

The result is something everyone involved can be proud of: a quality 69m² transportable home and a group of young people who can stand beside it at the end of the year and genuinely say: we built that. We know from teachers, whanau and friends of the students that this experience has been transformative.

Now it’s ready to move
