Health Central, Alexandra – Creating a New Health Hub for Central Otago

Breen was appointed by Mackersy Property to construct Health Central, a purpose‑built 1,500sqm medical facility bringing together urgent care, general practice, pharmacy, physiotherapy, mental health services and a café. Designed by Medispace and Arthouse Architects, the development creates a single, integrated healthcare hub for the Alexandra community.

Completed in mid‑2024, the project was delivered one month ahead of schedule and on budget. In 2025, Health Central received a Gold Award at the NZ Commercial Project Awards, recognising excellence in both design and construction.

Transforming a challenging site
The development sits on a former fuel station, requiring extensive environmental remediation, testing and certification and yndergrounding of overhead power infrastructure. Careful sequencing enabled early works and service installation.

Future-proofed structure
A steel portal frame with a clear-span upper floor gives the building long-term flexibility as healthcare services evolve. Locally sourced materials – Central Otago schist and Canterbury clay bricks – embed the building in its regional context. Vertical aluminium louvres provide passive solar control, complementing the design’s emphasis on natural light and ventilation.

Award-winning delivery
The 2025 Gold Award from the NZ Commercial Project Awards reflects the project’s quality, precision and collaborative approach across multiple design and clinical teams. Congratulations to our Southland Area Manager, Francois Swartz and team for the delivery of this project.
