Hanlon Residence

Wanaka, Central Otago

This project transformed a well-loved 1960s holiday home into a modern architectural residence while preserving the character and memories that made it special to the family.

Having owned the property for more than 15 years, the client wanted to invest in its future rather than replace it. Their goal was to create a home that could continue to be enjoyed by future generations, while bringing its performance, comfort and appearance up to modern standards.

The renovation involved stripping the home back to its original structure and foundations before rebuilding it from the inside out. Working within the constraints of the existing 1960s framing required significant structural strengthening and modifications before the new architectural design could be realised. The project also included a complete upgrade of the building envelope, along with a full internal fit-out and new extension.

As with many complex renovations, uncovering the existing structure presented challenges that could not have been anticipated at the outset. The team worked closely with architects and engineers throughout the build to develop practical solutions as new information came to light.

One such challenge required resolving of moisture ingress issues in the basement. Extensive waterproofing works and non-standard solutions were required to address the issue and improve the long-term performance of the home.

Complex renovations demand a different skill set to new builds. Rather than working from a predictable sequence, every stage requires careful assessment of the existing structure, close collaboration between the site team, architects and engineers, and the ability to make informed decisions as new challenges emerge. It is this combination of experience, attention to detail and practical problem-solving that enables projects like this to be delivered successfully.

The result is a contemporary architectural home that retains its sentimental value while providing the comfort, durability and performance expected of a modern residence. The client was delighted with the outcome and excited to begin creating a new generation of family memories.
