Opuha Dam resilience upgrade featured in the Timaru Courier

Breen’s work on the Opuha Low Level Outlet Dam Resilience Upgrade has been featured in the Timaru Courier, highlighting the project’s important role in strengthening flood protection for South Canterbury communities.

The new low-level outlet gives Opuha Water greater ability to make controlled water releases ahead of significant rainfall events. As reported by the Timaru Courier, the system can reduce Lake Opuha’s water level by approximately 6.5% per day ahead of predicted high rainfall, creating additional capacity in the lake before floodwater arrives.

For Breen, the project involved delivering complex infrastructure in a challenging environment at the base of an operating earth dam. Careful planning, collaboration and a strong focus on safety were required throughout construction.

The completed upgrade is designed to strengthen the resilience of the dam and provide greater flexibility in how water levels are managed during major weather events.

It is a project with a very practical outcome – helping protect downstream communities, productive land and critical infrastructure across South Canterbury.
